MID AMERICA XC SERIES

(3/21/2014)

For ATV cross-country racing, the big series are GNCC and WORCS. In the past, both series have pledged to extend the reach of their events to become a true national series. That hasn't happened. GNCC remains solidly East Coast based, and WORCS is fully a West Coast series.

Mike Gibbs felt like the racers in Middle America were being left out, and in 2010, began the Mid America Cross-Country championship (MAXC) series. Right away a number of GNCC regulars began chasing the series, and some have switched to it altogether.

For 2013, the series has evolved into a 10-race series, consisting of one- and two-day events, with a full range of classes for ATVs and motorcycles. The series is supported by $250,000 in contingencies and is spread across the majority of classes. For the pros, there is a $3000 purse. When Gibbs started the MAXC, he looked at the available off-road racing opportunities, and he tried to combine the best aspects of each series.

WHAT ARE THE RACES LIKE?

There is a lot of GNCC influence in the course length and the basic class layouts. Currently, the MAXC is hovering around 500 riders, with roughly 200 of those being quads. The series goal is to max out at around 600 riders. The smaller numbers compared to a GNCC means that the series has a choice of more venues that will accommodate the racing. As a result, the courses can be tighter and more technical than a GNCC. At present, the race venues are in Indiana and Kentucky, but MAXC has plans to expand into other Middle America states, beginning with Illinois and Michigan.

PLANS AND GOOD STUFF

One of the unique points of the series is a charity race for the Riley Hospital for Children (http://iuhealth.org/riley/) in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Miracle Race typically raises $60,000 for the hospital. In 2014, MAXC hopes to have made arrangements for a week long event with four races that will crown an AMA national cross-country champion.
