Richards and three of his team-mates will ride Honda Rincons – 650cc ATVs designed for agricultural use – in the ATV race, where over 300 riders compete to record the highest number of laps over a three-hour period. The fifth team-member, Mark Slade, will compete on Honda’s race ATV, the Sportrax 450R.
“For four of us, it’s our first Weston Beach Race,” explains Richards. “However, our fifth team-mate, Steve Atkins, finished second in the 4WD class last year and is currently on great form, lying fourth in the British Quad Enduro Championship as the highest-placed independent competitor. Another member of the team, Richard Smith, is also competing in the Enduro Championship and recently teamed up with Atkins to contest the arduous eight-hour Q8 race at Ottery St Mary, Devon. The duo won the ‘Iron Quad’ class riding the Honda Rincon that Smith will race at Weston. It is a testament to the Honda Rincon 650 – a machine designed primarily as a work vehicle – that it can compete against and even beat ATVs designed for racing.
“We’ve been preparing for the Weston Beach Race for some time now,” continues Richards. “It’s obviously a gruelling race that demands a certain level of strength and fitness. However, we have hardly made any alterations to either the Rincons or the Sportrax 450R. They simply don’t need them. The Honda Rincon is designed for durability and is virtually impervious to dirt or water so stands up to sand very effectively. Both bikes boast Honda’s trademark reliability combined with race-winning performance. I can’t wait until we all line up at Weston!”
ARK ATV’s Rob Richards, Steve Atkins, Richard Smith, Justin Atkins and Mark Slade will contest the All Terrain Vehicle event at the Weston Beach Race on Saturday 1 October at 1100.
