UTILITY MODELS

1 ARCTIC CAT THUNDERCAT H2 ($11,299)

The LE model is also available with a winch.

In 2010, the XP850 was 99 percent new. This year it gets bigger disc brakes and a number of other features, but the attention grabber is still the twin-cylinder motor. Polaris claims an impressive 70 horsepower which is about as much as a Ford Focus. Even the non-power-steering version features a Polaris design called Anti-Kickback Steering.

You can upgrade to the power-steering XT package for a total of $10,749 for the 800 and $9899 for the 650, and get a long list of extras in those packages.

5 POLARIS SPORTSMAN 800/500 H.O. ($7499/$5999)
Polaris keeps the original Sportsman models in the line up as slightly less expensive alternatives to the XPs. They offer many of the same features, like on-demand 4WD, 1500 pounds of towing capacity and 300 pound of combined rack capacity. The 800 and 500 use MacPherson strut front suspension and weigh slightly less than the 850 and 550.

6 POLARIS SPORTSMAN 800 BIG BOSS 6X6 ($9999)
If you have to carry a lot of stuff, here's how to do it. The 6x6 can carry 800 pounds in the cargo box and even has a gas-assist dump mechanism. It features all-wheel-drive, and it has a lot of wheels to drive. Traction shouldn't be an issue. Hauling it around might be. Still no EPS option.

7 KAWASAKI BRUTE FORCE 750 ($8699)
The Brute Force 750 truly is a Brute among Japanese ATVs. It’s a large machine, and it has a big V-twin motor to match. The 750 features EFI and a CV transmission. Kawasaki developed simulated engine braking so that the machine doesn’t free wheel going down hills, and as an extra measure, it has a sealed, multi-disc wet brake.

8 SUZUKI KING QUAD 750AXI* ($7699)
The big King Quad is powered by one of the largest single-cylinder motors on earth. The bore is 104mm or roughly the size of a small paint can. Our testing has found that this model has very quick steering for its size. No less than seven different versions are available including one with power steering for $1000 extra.

9 ARCTIC CAT MUD PRO 700/650 H1 ($9899/$8599)
Arctic Cat added the Mud Pro 650 to the line so that mud fleas can get sloppy for a little less cash. Like the 700, the 650 has 14 inches of ground clearance, oversize wheels and a snorkel intake system. This year they get the new 2WD/4WD/Diff lock switch on the right handlebar. A rear differential spike-load damper is used to deal with 28-inch mud tires.

10 ARCTIC CAT TBX700 H1 ($8799)
Sometimes the line between UTV, ATV and pickup truck gets a little blurry. The TBX is like having a truck between your legs. It carries a large bed with 300 pound of capacity and a tailgate. It also has 1050 pounds of towing capacity and a standard 2500-pound winch. It also gets the new 2WD/4WD/diff-lock switch.

11 ARCTIC CAT 700H1 ($8499)
You can call this the Thunder Kitten if you like. The 700 is based on the same V-twin powerplant that graces the big guy, and even in its 695cc form it ranks as one of the most powerful ATVs on the market. The H1 gets the new diff lock switch and if you plop down $900 more, you can get the LE with a winch and other features.

12 ARCTIC CAT SUPER DUTY DIESEL ($9699)
When it comes to a practical, workingman’s ATV it’s hard to top the Diesel, which means you don’t have to have a separate fuel supply for the ATV and the rest of the heavy equipment. It gets 50 percent better fuel mileage over a comparable gasoline ATV and this year the Diesel gets even more practical with the addition of a 2500-pound winch.

13 YAMAHA GRIZZLY 700 FI 4WD ($8699)
Yamaha says the Grizzly is the best-selling big-bore utility ATV in America. We don't doubt it; they're everywhere. The 700 motor is based on the same powerplant as the Raptor 700, which means power is good. The CV transmission gives you the option of 2WD, limited-slip 4WD and full diff-lock. And for $600 you get electric power steering.

14 HONDA RINCON ($8599)
Honda’s top utility ATV also happens to be our editorial favorite. It’s not the fastest, but it handles good, is comfortable and it’s effective in ugly terrain. We would like to see it get a front diff lock someday; maybe next year. The Rincon is one of the few Honda ATVs to be labeled a 2010 model even though it’s unchanged.

15 ARCTIC CAT 650H1/550H1/450H1 ($7199/$7599/$6899)
These three models represent the rank and file of Arctic Cat’s utility line. The 650 was introduced four years ago, followed by the 550 last year. The latest family member is the 450, which is a big technological upgrade over the 366 engine. They all have similar chassis, but the 650 is the only one with a carburetor.

16 KAWASAKI BRUTE FORCE 650 ($7549)
In case you really don’t need to race Ninjas with the power of the 750, Kawasaki still offers the 650, which is a similar machine aside from displacement and the lack of EFI. You still get lots of rack space and lots of power, plus a handlebar-mounted differential lock. For an extra $1050 you can get full independent rear suspension on the 650i.

As the smaller stablemate to the XP850, the 550 shares all the same features aside from displacement. It was new last year and has twin A-arms up front instead of the older MacPherson strut design. It has Polaris' simulated engine braking so that you don't need to ride the brake on long downhills. Like the 850, it's available with electric power steering.

18 YAMAHA GRIZZLY 550 FI 4WD ($7599)
Yamaha took the chassis from the 700 Grizzly, put in a smaller, single-cylinder liquid-cooled four-stroke motor and dropped the price. In sheer capability, the 550 Grizzly doesn't give up much, it still has On Command 4WD and full diff-lock mode. And like its big bro, it's available with power steering, but it will cost $900 more.

3 POLARIS SPORTSMAN 850/550 TOURING EPS ($10,999/$9299)
Polaris took the new XP chassis with its dual-A-arm front suspension and stretched it into a two-up. The big news is that the Touring models come standard with electric power-steering, plus the wheelbase is longer and the passenger compartment is plush. Both the 850 and 550 models have the same motors as the XP versions and are fat in the horsepower department.

The 2WD Kawasaki Bayou isn’t glamorous but it does get you where you need to be with a modest payload. The machine is bare bones but has reverse and electric start. And it cost $100 less than a Honda Recon.

The 250X with its longitudinal motor and drive shaft is the platform for the more utility oriented Recon. It’s well suited for the job because the 229cc air-cooled motor requires so little attention.
